Month: January 2016

Monthly Jams ♬ January

music january 2016

Hi friends!

Like the majority of the rest of the planet, music is a part of my daily life. I love all different styles of music (literally), and music is something that can affect my mood in so many different ways. I am constantly looking for new music, finding old hidden gems that I’ve forgotten about, and playing my newest song obsession over and over again. So, I thought it would be fun to do a monthly music roundup :)

I’m not going to have a set number of songs I share with you guys each month; I’m just going to list whatever songs have been the most played and loved.

Here they are for January 2016!

  • Jumpman – Drake & Future
    • I am still loving this entire mixtape. Still.
  • Say It – Tory Lanez
    • I’ve just recently discovered Tory Lanez, and I wish I’d found him sooner. FYI: Ed Sheeran covered this song (as he tends to do with hip hop songs) and it is AMAZING. Look it up.
  • Don’t You Worry – R. City
    • These guys are so cool. In my opinion, they are a reggae/island vibe with some hip hop mixed in.
  • Straight Up – Ty Dolla $ign, feat. Jagged Edge
    • Ty Dolla $ign is one of my current favorites in general, but this is the track I keep coming back to.
  • 1Hunnid – K CAMP, feat. Fetty Wap
    • I heard this song once and added it to my playlist, and then I kind of forgot about it. So every time it came on shuffle, I just skipped it because the first few seconds irritated me for some reason. Then one day I got past the first few and into the actual song and remembered why I added it in the first place.
  • In My Room – Yellow Claw, feat. DJ Mustard, Ty Dolla $ign, & Tyga)
    • I really haven’t gotten into anything else by Yellow Claw, but like I already mentioned, I just love Ty Dolla $ign so this song stuck out to me.
  • Make Love – Chris Brown
    • I love Chris Brown. A LOT. This song reminds me of Boyz II Men or R. Kelly (pre- Trapped in the Closet, if you know what I’m sayin’) — old school R&B. His new album is all good, but this is one of those songs I find myself singing with a pretend microphone, which in my world is kind of like winning a Grammy, so…
  • All the Ways – Wet
    • This is one of those songs that I’m guilty of listening to on repeat for an obscene amount of time. It’s just that good.
  • Sober – Selena Gomez
    • Fun fact: I’ve always had love for Selena Gomez. I legitimately enjoyed watching Wizards of Waverly Place with the girl I nannied, and I’ve always thought she was talented musically and her songs were catchy. This new album though… Selena grew up. And I am loving it.
  • Hands to Myself – Selena Gomez
    • see above. Plus, I never knew I wanted to be described as “metaphorical gin & juice” until I heard this song.
  • Promise – Kid Ink, feat. Fetty Wap
    • I’m going to be honest with you guys, I like basically any song Fetty Wap is on. I tried to convince myself that I just liked him ironically, but no, I genuinely like pretty much everything he does.
  • Lay It All On Me – Rudimental, feat. Ed Sheeran, Big Sean, & Vic Mensa
    • I loved the song Feel the Love by Rudimental, but that was all I really listened to by them, so I was really excited when I discovered this song. Plus, I think Ed Sheeran is so talented, and I love when he dabbles in hip hop (whether it be covers as I mentioned earlier or features on songs like this). Speaking of, if you haven’t heard Old School Love, stop reading this and go listen right now. Just remember to come back when you’re done 😉
  • New Level – A$AP Ferg, feat. Future
    • This is my most recent discovery, and I can’t get enough of it.
  • Throwback of the month: Let Me Love You – Mario
    • This song came out when I was in high school, and I still find myself listening to it on a pretty regular basis… The fact that it came out over 10 years ago makes me feel like a dinosaur though.

Apparently I was feelin’ quite a few songs this month! New year, new music 😛

What are your current favorite songs or artists? Let me know in the comments!

Druzy Stud Earrings from Etsy

Hi friends!

It’s amazing the way accessories can change and elevate the look of any outfit, and accessorizing is one of my favorite parts of putting together an outfit. Ever since I got my ears pierced at 8 years old, earrings have been my favorite accessories to amp up my look. I have gone through many phases when it comes to my earring choices (and style choices in general… Let’s save that discussion for another post!) Recently, I have been wearing stud earrings pretty much every day.

My reasons for currently rocking studs on a regular basis:

  • They are simple and classic
  • They look great when you have your hair up or down
  • They are far less likely to get caught on things (a real issue!)
  • They allow you to use other accessories & jewelry pieces without being overwhelmingly accessorized (is that even a thing? I guess I just made it one)

I have accumulated quite a few pairs of studs, but the most interesting and unique ones I’ve ever purchased arrived on my doorstep last night. I randomly came across this Instagram page on my “Explore” tab while idly scrolling one night, and I fell in love with the earrings. So I went to her Etsy store and chose a few pairs.

After I completed my order, Etsy informed me that my order would be coming from a town that is only 2 towns over from where I live! I hadn’t even realized where she was located because I’d been so enamored by the stones, and then come to find out they were handmade approximately 20 minutes from where I was sitting. I ordered 4 pairs of stud earrings. The pretty glittering effect that you see on 3 of the 4 pairs is called druzy, and this comes from layering tiny crystals on top of some other colorful mineral. These are DreamOwlDruzy’s specialty. The 4th pair (2nd from the left in the picture) looks like iridescent mermaid scales which will be perfect to wear during the summer. She hand-makes every single order placed through her store, and each pair came even more beautiful than I was expecting. I’m so excited to start wearing these; I think they are going to look great with both dressed-up and dressed-down looks, and I’m already eyeing a few more pairs 😉

Be sure to check out DreamOwlDruzy on Etsy and Instagram (dream.owl.druzy on Instagram)… A great way to shop small (and local for my Northern California readers!)

What’s your favorite accessory? And if you like wearing stud earrings, what are some of your favorites?!

Skincare: After-Hours Edition

Hi friends!

Sundays can be simultaneously my favorite and least favorite day of the week; brunch, mimosas, football, and relaxation are some of my favorite things, but there’s always that little feeling of disappointment knowing that the weekend is coming to an end. In order to be sure I’m greeting Monday and the start of a new week with a fresh face and my best foot forward, I’m always extra-careful to make sure I do my entire nighttime skin care routine on Sunday evenings. This is one of my favorite ways to relax at the end of the any day, but I especially enjoy it on Sundays. Now, don’t get me wrong, there are many evenings when I have to force myself to go into the bathroom and take my makeup off instead of getting right in bed… especially on those really good makeup days when I’m just not ready to take my makeup off yet! But it is so important to remove makeup every night and find a skincare regimen that works for you. Aside from a couple of products, in the past couple of months I feel like I have finally found my ideal regimen. So, here it is!

After Hours Skincare Products
After Hours Skincare Products

For reference: I would consider my skin type to be normal/combination. I get oily in my t-zone, experience very occasional dry patches, and I do also experience mild hormonal breakouts.

STEP 1: Remove eye makeup with Sonia Kashuk Makeup Remover & a cotton pad for each eye. This is my favorite eye makeup remover without a doubt. I have tried a few here and there, but this really does the job for me and I’ve just never felt the need to stray 😉

STEP 2: Remove face makeup and remaining eye makeup with a makeup remover wipe. The brand changes just about every month because I love trying different wipes, but the Neutrogena Makeup Remover Wipes are my ride or dies for sure.

STEP 3: Use Simple Micellar Water or Bioderma (or another micellar water) on a cotton pad to remove final traces. This may seem like overkill, but I always find that I still have makeup lingering after the first 2 steps, so I just like to take this extra step to ensure I’m getting as much of my makeup off as possible. I don’t see much of a difference between the 2 that I have used. Since Bioderma has to be ordered online and the Simple brand can be purchased in Target, I might gravitate a little more toward the Simple brand for solely this reason.

STEP 4: Wash my face with Korres Greek Yoghurt Foaming Cream Cleanser. This is a new step (I was using Origins Checks & Balances Frothy Face Wash before which I now reserve for the mornings). But guys. This stuff smells amazing. I got it as a sample from a Sephora order a few weeks ago, and I kid you not: when I began lathering it on my face, I said “What? Yep. This will work. Wow. This smells so good.” OUT LOUD. Alone in my bathroom. I had a moment. Go smell this right now. Then, I happened to text Ann-Alecia (she’s the fellow makeup junkie I’ve mentioned before) about it and she told me it’s the face wash she uses, so that was all I needed to hear. I ordered it. Obviously. As I said, it is new to my regimen so I can’t give a full recommendation, but thus far it seems to get the job done.

STEP 5: Apply my Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Framboos™ Glycolic Night Serum. That’s a mouthful, I know. This is HOLY.GRAIL.STATUS, without a doubt. It’s expensive. I’m not going to sugarcoat that. But it is so worth it. I have noticed an improvement in skin tone and texture, and I especially notice a difference when I DON’T use it. I’m on my second bottle of it, and I have a third one chilling in my drawer just waiting to be used so that I literally don’t have to go a night without this stuff.

STEP 6: Apply my Murad Rapid Age Spot and Pigment Lightening Serum. One of my main skin concerns these days is evening out my skin tone and getting rid of redness and some other discoloration. I’m about halfway through my first bottle of this serum, and I’m not sold. I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it. I have heard many good things about a similar product from Kiehl’s, so I think I will try that once this bottle runs out and compare the results. I have noticed some improvement with this product, but it’s certainly nothing to write home about for me, and I likely will not repurchase it.

STEP 7: Apply one of two facial oils. The 2 I currently have are the Drunk Elephant Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil and the Sunday Riley Artemis Oil. I alternate between these 2 kind of whenever I feel like it; which one I use just depends on how I’m feeling that night. Of the 2, I prefer the Drunk Elephant one and am more likely to repurchase that one (I’m actually on my 2nd bottle). Artemis is very heavy and definitely has an organic, earthy scent. The scent does not bother me nearly as much as I have seen some reviewers say, but it certainly doesn’t smell like flowers. For how expensive these oils are, I honestly don’t know that I will repurchase either when these bottles run out. As I mentioned, I would not mind repurchasing the Drunk Elephant oil, but I don’t love it enough to not explore other facial oils before I go back to it. And as far as Artemis is concerned, this will be my only bottle; it just didn’t do enough for me to justify the price tag (and the scent).

STEP 8: Apply my First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream. A moisturizer after a facial oil seems redundant, but during these winter months I have felt as though my skin has been needing the extra moisture. When I follow the oil with a moisturizer, my skin is awake and fresh when I wake up in the morning, not dull and dry. This is my favorite nighttime moisturizer; it is thick but it sinks right into the skin. I toyed with the idea of trying a different nighttime moisturizer when I decided to add this step back into my routine, but I decided to trust the age-old advice, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.

Aside from exploring the world of facial oils more in the future and trying the Kiehl’s dark spot corrector, the only step I feel my skincare routine could benefit from would be an eye cream. I have bags and lines under my eyes like you wouldn’t believe, but I’ve just never seen results from an eye cream so I always eventually just stop applying one. Any suggestions for a life-changing nighttime eye cream?!

What is your after-hours skincare routine? Is there anything you think I should add or try? Let me know :)

Sneakers: not just for the gym anymore.

Hi friends!

Rose Gold Nikes
Rose Gold Nikes

One of my favorite pastimes is looking at sneakers online. Seriously. There’s a chance it could be considered obsessive.

In high school, I wore Vans and Converse all the time, but that was about as far as I dabbled into the world of “lifestyle” sneakers. Since then, I’ve worn a lot of flats, boots, heels, and sandals, but sneakers found their way out of my wardrobe and only onto my feet if I was working out. Until recently. I bought a pair of Nike Airmax 90’s about 2 years ago because I have always been drawn to the style, and this particular colorway was on sale. However, I’ve only worn them a handful of times. As cute as they are, the bright pink & mint green don’t leave a ton of room for styling beyond those 2 colors, so consequently these have basically been collecting dust in my closet.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago: I was indulging in my weekly (Bi-weekly? Daily?) episode of browsing sneakers online when I came across these on Needless to say, they came home to mama. Nike describes the metallic accent color as “red bronze” but that is rose gold to me, and no one can tell me otherwise. Rose gold is another weakness of mine, so I just couldn’t pass these up.

Now, as I mentioned, I have barely dipped my toe (pun intended) in the “wearing sneakers somewhere other than the gym” pool, so I am still struggling with how to style these well. However, one of the things I love about this pair is the bit of black. That made it very easy for me to throw on black leggings and a black sweater with some rose gold jewelry. This allowed the Nikes to be the focal point of the outfit, and the black with rose gold accents tied it all together.

Any black leggings and black top will work for this outfit. The jewelry was all purchased from Charming Charlie. The link bracelet is just simple rose gold triangular links that almost look like hearts. I just have to give you guys a close up of the other bracelet and the necklace.

Rose Gold & Opal Bracelet
Rose Gold & Opal Bracelet

I’m hoping the opalescence that these stones have is coming through; I’ve been really loving opalescent and iridescent finishes recently. It’s beautiful enough to wear on its own, but it’s also a great bracelet to stack with others.

Teardrop Pendant
Teardrop Pendant

This necklace is so unique, and it works really well against a black or white top. The pendant looks purple in this photo, but it is actually a brownish/amber color that shifts in different lights. The attachments that adorn the outside of the pendant are rose gold, and it is attached to a long double chain which is both gunmetal and gold. I really enjoy mixing metals, so this necklace was put in my basket immediately after I first saw it.

Needless to say, I already have my eye on several other pairs of sneakers… I may have an online shopping cart or 2 filled as we speak 😉 What are your favorite “lifestyle” sneakers? And any suggestions on how you would style this particular pair?

Fitness Goals for 2016

Fitness Goals 2016

Hi friends!

Since we just celebrated the new year, like 86% of the rest of the world (I made that statistic up, shhh!), I have made some resolutions goals for 2016 that revolve around making healthier choices. I think the word “resolution” can have a negative connotation for a lot of people (myself included) and brings a lot of unnecessary pressure. For me, the word “goal” is much more positive, so I’m going with that this year and setting myself up for success 😉

I am constantly trying to workout more, eat healthier, and make overall better decisions with regards to fitness, but I am very guilty of falling off the wagon. So, what better time than the start of a new year to refocus my goals and my mindset? And maybe putting them down in writing for the whole internet to see will help keep me accountable.

My goals this year are simple, cliché, and ones that I’ve probably made at least 17 times in the past. But, new year, new beginnings, and I have a great feeling about 2016.

So, without further ado, here they are:

  • Drink enough water. Every day.
    • This one is hard for me. But there are so many benefits to staying hydrated, so I’m committing myself to slowly upping my water intake over the next couple of months and turning it into a habit.
  • Cook at home more frequently.
    • I love to cook, and I truly feel more satisfied sitting down to eat a meal that I’ve prepared at home. Not to mention 9 out of 10 times (again- another made up statistic by yours truly!) cooking at home is going to be healthier than whatever you get elsewhere.
  • Make better decisions when eating out.
    • aka, I don’t always have to get a side of fries. With ranch.
  • Work out on a consistent schedule at least 4x a week.
    • Or maybe three. Three to four times a week. On average. Somewhere in that range. Eventually. I’ll get there. Baby steps.
  • Explore yoga.
    • I have tried yoga a handful of times in the past, and it has never clicked for me. I have recently realized that going to a studio is not for me, and I would much prefer to treat yoga the way it should be treated- as a practice and a personal journey of growth. This, for me, means doing it in the comfort of my own home with the help of YouTube videos and tutorials (like the ones from Yoga with Adriene).

What are your resolutions? And what are your tips for sticking with them?

Makeup Products for a Deserted Island

Hi friends!

If I was stranded on a deserted island, let me assure you that my makeup bag would not be at the top of my list of things to be stranded with. However, if I were afforded the luxury of having a small makeup bag with me, there are five items that would absolutely need to be inside.

This list serves as a good starting point if you want to put together an “emergency makeup kit” to keep in your bag or your car or to quickly grab if you think you might get stranded somewhere 😉

top 5 makeup products
5 Deserted Island Makeup Products
  • Loreal Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation
Loreal Infallible Foundation
Loreal Infallible Foundation

I have always struggled to find my “perfect” foundation. I used to be a bit of a foundation snob, and I made the rounds through many high-end foundations sold at Sephora, but I was never 100% satisfied. I heard a ton of hype about this “drugstore” foundation and finally decided to give it a try. I had zero expectations, and I even remember telling my friend Ann-Alecia, a fellow makeup junkie, that I was going to be very frustrated if I finally found my “holy grail” in a drugstore foundation after years of throwing money to expensive ones. Well, guess what happened. My main concerns with foundation are coverage and how long I can go without blotting/touching up. Let me tell you- Loreal Infallible hits it out of the park in both categories. It is full coverage, and as long as I set it with a powder, I am good to go all day with no touch ups or blotting.

  • Powder
Tarte Amazonian Clay Powder Foundation
Tarte Amazonian Clay Powder Foundation

As I mentioned, I have to set my foundation with a powder. I have been setting it with the Tarte Amazonian Clay Loose Powder Foundation, and this is a nice combination. However, I do not love the packaging of this powder, especially if I am trying to have it in my bag to use on the go. I have recently purchased a pressed setting powder from Tarte, and i’m hoping it will work well with my foundation and replace the loose one. A powder is a great thing to have with you in case you need a bit more coverage or need to eliminate some shine.

  •  Kat Von D Tattoo Liner

    Kat Von D Tattoo Liner
    Kat Von D Tattoo Liner

I know this is cliché nowadays, but winged liner is my jam. I wear a wing with just about every eye makeup look, regardless of the ocassion. And Kat Von D’s Tattoo Liner is my favorite. Period. It is a liquid liner with a felt tip and it makes application so simple. The product is not too wet, so you have more control when creating the line. Bottom line: if you like winging your liner, you need this.

  • Mascara

    Urban Decay Perversion Mascara
    Urban Decay Perversion Mascara

When you’re in a bind with no makeup, mascara is the easiest way to amp up your “no makeup” look. A few quick swipes of a good mascara makes your eyes look bigger and more awake. I am constantly trying new mascaras, but I have a couple that I love and repurchase consistently: Urban Decay PerversionCovergirl Lash Blast, and Too Faced Better Than SexI only have Urban Decay’s Perversion in my possession right now, so I have only included a picture of that mascara.

    • MAC Crème Cup

      MAC Creme Cup
      MAC Creme Cup

Throwing a little bit of color on your lips is a great and easy way to amp up your look and feel more put together. This lipstick is the one that I have in my purse at all times. Okay, not the only one… I’m definitely guilty of keeping an arsenal of lip products with me at all times. However, this is my go-to shade. It is a beautiful light nudey-pink shade, and it is a cremesheen; both of these characteristics make it super easy to quickly apply when you need something on your lips that you can wear without tedious application or concerns about whether it will match whatever look you are currently rocking. I know matte lips are all the rage right now, and I am certainly on that bandwagon. But when i think of a lip color that is effortless and just works for me, MAC’s Crème Cup is it.

The great thing about having items along the lines of these 5 with you is that you can create a quick, simple look in just a few minutes using only these products. If you just planned to run a few errands and left the house barefaced but then got a text inviting you to lunch/coffee/drinks/etc., this survival kit can help you look and feel your best on the go!

What would be in your deserted island makeup bag?!

The project at hand…

Hi friends!
Welcome to my new project. This page will quickly bring you up to speed about why I have started this blog, and this first post will explain what my content and posts will consist of moving forward.
